Finding the flight

Get the flight number and departure date from their confirmation — for example United flight number plus the date. A screenshot is enough.
Search the same route and date on united.com or on Google Flights, and filter the results to United.
Match the scheduled departure time, then expand the itinerary and check that the flight number is identical. Same number, same date, same aircraft.
Book your own ticket. It will be a separate reservation from theirs.

United specifics

Linking two bookings. United agents can cross-reference separate confirmation numbers so the flight shows you as travelling together. Do this after both tickets are issued, and ask the agent to assign adjacent seats in the same call.
Seat selection. On standard Economy fares, most regular seats are free to choose at booking. Economy Plus (extra legroom) and preferred rows carry a fee unless you have status or a card benefit.
Basic Economy is the trap. United Basic Economy does not include advance seat assignment as standard — seats are allocated at check-in, and you may be split up even if you booked together. If sitting with your travel companion matters, book standard Economy instead. Basic Economy also restricts changes.
Same-day change. If you end up on a different United flight and want to move onto theirs, United's same-day change lets you switch to another flight on the same route and calendar day, subject to availability, from 24 hours before departure. It is free for Premier members and on some fare types, and a flat fee otherwise. Basic Economy is not eligible.
United Express and codeshares. A UA flight number in the 3000–6000 range is typically operated by a regional partner, and a partner-marketed ticket (Lufthansa, Air Canada) may show a different number for the same aircraft. Match by departure time and route when the numbers disagree.

Pitfalls
